What to do at accident scene
Some people would not be dead if only we had the right attitude at accident scene, the question is, what will you do if you were involved in a car accident or you witnessed one?
Below are steps to follow at accident scene:
- Stay calm. Getting upset only makes a bad situation more difficult. Maintain your composure even if the other person doesn’t.
- Stay at the Scene. Never leave the accident scene until it’s appropriate to do so. If you leave, particularly where someone has sustained injuries or was killed, you can face serious criminal penalties for being a hit and run driver.
- Don’t blame the accident on anyone including yourself. Even if you might be at fault, don’t say so to anyone. Give your full description of the accident only to the police officer.
- Try to protect the scene of the accident. Do this wisely, have a kit with emergency cones, triangles or flares to protect the accident scene so as to prevent further occurrences.
- Check for injuries. Before assessing property damage, make sure everyone involved in the accident is okay. Get medical attention for anyone who needs it. If a person is unconscious or has neck or back pain, don’t move them until qualified medical help arrives, unless a hazard requires moving the person.
- Call the police. I know majority of us try to avoid this but it is necessary, even if the accident is minor call the police. Notify them of injuries, ensure the police are involved. Ask that a police report be filed in situations where cops do arrive at the scene, and obtain the name and badge numbers of the responding officers.
- Exchange Information. Get the names, numbers, addresses, drivers’ license numbers, license plate numbers, and basic insurance information from all drivers involved. If there are passengers, also obtain their names, numbers, and addresses. In talking to other drivers, try to be cordial and cooperative. This is necessary if you are a victim.
- Inform Your Insurance Company. Cooperate with them and tell them the truth about what happened and the extent of your injuries. Explain the facts clearly and take pictures of the scene. This is necessary if you are a victim.
